Drip coffee maker ratio
Most drip machine "cups" are 5 oz (150 ml), while a mug holds 8 oz or more. Weighing the coffee fixes that: about 1:16 gives a standard cup, 1:15 is stronger. The water you pour into the tank is not what ends up in the pot, since the grounds hold back about twice their weight.

The numbers
- Starting ratio
- 1:16
- Usual range
- 1:15 to 1:18
- Grind
- Medium, like sand
- Water temperature
- Set by the machine, usually 90–96 °C
- Brew time
- 5–8 minutes
- Example
- A full 1.2 liter pot takes about 75 g of coffee. That is about 14 level tablespoons, at 5–6 g of ground coffee each.
Steps
- Weigh the coffee and put it into a paper or mesh filter.
- Fill the tank with fresh water to the amount you want to brew.
- Start the machine and let it finish. Stir the pot once before pouring.
- Take the pot off the heat plate when it is done, since a hot plate cooks the coffee.
Tips
- If your cups taste weak, add coffee before touching anything else.
- Fill the tank for the full pot size. Machines brew best near their rated capacity.
